First Case of Enterovirus 68 with Severe Complications Reported in this Warmer Winter in Kaohsiung; Enterovirus Control Has to Be Done.

Due to the changing climate, the enterovirus season occurred 3 months later than usual. Centers for Disease Control, Ministry of Health and Welfare announced 11 enterovirus cases with severe complications until November 11th in Taiwan. Last week there was a new case of enterovirus 68 with severe complications occurred in Kaohsiung City. A girl living in Fengshan District experienced symptoms including fever, cough on October 17th, and asthenia in her left leg on October 19th as the disease progressed. On October 20th, since she did not recover well, she was admitted to the pediatric medicine ward in the hospital and then reported as a suspected enterovirus case with severe complications. On November 6th she was confirmed by Centers for Disease Control as an enterovirus 68 case with severe symptoms. Her vital signs has been under control and she is recovering now. In the investigation of authority concerned, there were 2 students infected by enterovirus in the class of the kindergarten where the case studied. The kindergarten will be fined since it did not report the infection in time and suspend classes for 7 days in accordance with the laws of psychedelic control. Authority concerned has started to instruct the kindergarten in enterovirus control policies including hand washing promotion, healthcare management, and environment disinfection.

        Department of Health suggests you to be careful of enterovirus though it is winter already. Please pay attention to severe symptoms including hypersomnia, confusional state, fatigue, asthenia, cramping, wheezing, and increasing heart rate which may occur in infants and children. Once your infant or child has the severe symptoms above, please as soon as possible go to 7 responsible hospitals including Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Kaohsiung Medical University Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital, E-Da Hospital, Zuoying Branch of Kaohsiung Armed Forces General Hospital, Kaohsiung Municipal United Hospital, Kaohsiung Municipal Siaogang Hospital.
