There has been a reported case where an infant less than 1 year old accidentally took an adult nutritional supplement and was urgently admitted to a hospital. Infant and follow-up formula food have to be reviewed and approved by Ministry of Health and Welfare before they are released to the market. For babies' health, Department of Health highly recommends parents to select infant and follow-up formula foods approved by Ministry of Health and Welfare rather than random ones, and also consult professionals like doctors, dietitians, and health care experts for appropriate formula foods and the safe way to use formula before they feed their babies with that.

The so-called "infant formula food" is the food which by itself can supply appropriate nutrients for infants below 6 months; "follow-up formula food" is designed to be combined with solid baby food for infants between 6 months and 12 months in the weaning process, but it is not for infants below 6 months.

Department of Health recommends breastfeeding, and warns parents against unapproved foods and illegal foods without Chinese labels on the packages. Please refer to Food and Drug Administration's "Food and Drug Information Website for Consumers" (https://consumer.fda.gov.tw/Food/BabyFood.aspx?nodeID=291) for information about the approved infant and follow-up formula foods. Under the instruction of Department of Health, the Pharmacist Association shall notice community pharmacies to provide customers with advisory services of baby's diet, and medical institutions including Postpartum Nursing Care Centers and women friendly hospitals and the like, during their prepartum and postpartum health education, shall remind parents to consult doctors, dietitians or other professionals as far as baby's diet issues are concerned.
